Can canadians work for an american company fishing king crabs?

Would 3 months of salmon fishing be acceptable experience for a student to apply for this job?|||Alaskan King Crab season is October - November and January - March. Snow Crab is October - March. If I recall correct you must be 18 and the boat owner hires who he wants. It is always best to find someone and make a friend and get referred. It is a very tough job. I hope this helps. Good luck and be careful.

How do you know when king crab legs go bad?

any seafood will smell more fishy as time goes on. Also slimy when it really gets bad. While all seafood smells vaguely like the sea, it should not smell like you have your nose stuck into a fish.|||Any doubt you have that your seafood has gone bad or a little too old, throw it away. Seafood poising can be the most horrendous thing you can go through. Its not worth it and will scar you for life.

You nose knows when any kind of food has seen its day, so chuck it as soon as you have the slightest doubt.|||You'll know they've gone bad when your body is simultaneously purging itself from both ends.

I wouldn't keep them past a day. In fact, the safest thing is to cook and eat them the day you buy them.

I am making king crab and steak for my girlfriend. what is the best steak to serve for a romantic dinner? An

and how will i know when the crab is done. what is the best red wine to serve also.

thank you in advance for your help with this|||This is my favorite meal.

Make sure the king crab legs are already split, so you can just slip the meat out. If not......this will NOT be a romantic dinner.

The best way to cook crab, that I have found is to bake it. Never boil it, and steaming is 2nd best. But if you bake, you won't be dealing with the liquidy runoff.

Preheat oven to 425, and cook in a disposable aluminum roaster (no cleanup!) for about 15 min if thawed. 20 or so if frozen. Shells will be bright red when done. (It doesn't hurt to peek in the oven.) If your timing is off with the rest of what you are serving, it's OK to turn the oven off, and just leave the legs in a warm oven for 10-15 min.

Definitely use real butter for dipping.

The steak? 2 bacon-wrapped beef filets. As in filet mignon. Do not scrimp. Go to the butcher shop, not the grocery store. Trust me on this one. The butcher will wrap the filet with bacon for you. Ask him for two 5-6 oz. filets, with a bit of age on them. Broil or grill the steaks.

As for wine.......ignore the wine snobs, and go for what you both enjoy. I am a fan of Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon, which is a little pricy, but oh so good. Merlot works well will this meal as well.

Have fun|||That's what makes this site so fun, helping people out based on your own experience. I'm glad the dinner was awesome. Thanks for the response.

|||Prime rib.....|||lobster steak i would think for a lady. if things go right, she should be getting all the meat she wants after dinner. (sorry, i tried to make it as clean as i could, but you all know it's true)|||That's really sweet. I think as long as it doesn't have any bones in it, so no T-bone. Make sure it is done thoroughly because pink steak is gross. Good Luck!|||I would serve filet mignon. It is the most expensive cut of meat because it is the most tender. It is also the easiest to cook.

You can grill it easily, broil it or pan fry it.

I suggest pan-frying it as you are making king crab as well. You can put the pot of water on to boil for the crab and start your pan for the meat.

For two filet mignons, I'd get a big pan, put about a dollop or two of butter. Wait for it to melt. You want the fire on med-low. You want the butter to melt, but not brown in the first 5 minutes. You can tell the meat is ready to put into the pan by taking a pinch of flour and throwing it into the pan. If it sizzles, it's ready. If it's not, turn the heat up just a tad. You don't want to do this with water as it will come back and ricochet hot butter at you.

Once the meat is in the pans cooking, I'd let it sit for 8-12 minutes on each side (depending on how thick the filets are). I then throw in a couple of dashes of worcestershire sauce (just a few --- most people who don't like it don't even know I put it in there), salt, pepper, and then some sliced mushrooms. While the liquid seeps out of the meat, it will cook the mushrooms and flavor a little au jus. Flip the meat and mix the mushrooms around so they cook evenly. Then within less than 30 minutes, they're done!

My favorite red wine is Grgich Hills Cabernet Sauvignon. I've always liked this wine and thought it was pricier because it came from a small boutique winery. But I've recently found out that it's because it wins tons of awards and apparently was the house favorite of the Reagan and Clinton administrations (not to mention Queen Elizabeth's, too!). I sometimes find it in the grocery store, but it can also be found in stores like BevMo. The last cab I bought for the 2002 Cab was about $57 around Christmas.|||Prime rib is usually considered the best steak, but the size of it makes it not such a good choice to serve with the rich buttery crab.

I would go with something smaller like a ribeye or New York strip to serve with the crab.

For the crab, it is cooked when you buy it. To heat it, brush lightly with oil and place in a hot oven until they get hot and can crack. I hated steaming or boiling crab since it makes the crab difficult to crack open and they even become waterlogged. So bake them until the test edge of the leg makes an audible crack and they are very hot to the touch. Serve with butter and lemon.

Remember to not serve so much that you can't have dessert!

And dont eat so much that your date feels too full to enjoy the rest of an otherwise romantic evening. Eat light!|||tenderloin|||STEAK: Black Angus or Ranchers Reserve Filet Mignon.

I recommend this cut because it is extremely tender and relatively small. You can find Ranchers Reserve at a Safeway affiliate (Vons, Pavillians, etc.). Stay AWAY from Prime or USDA.

WINE: Columbia Crest Grand Estates Cabernet Savaignon

I recommend this wine (make SURE to get the Grand Estates, not the Valley or Two Vines) because it will meld with the steak and crab, without overpowering either. It's readily available at markets, drugstores or high end liquor stores. $10.

CRAB: The shell will turn dark orange.

If I can make a suggestion, take the guts out of both before serving.

They are already red and frozen...should I just boil them, and for how long?

Is it okay to eat King Crab Legs?

I am 15 weeks pregnant and I LOVE crab legs so my husband was being sweet and brought some home for me. The only problem is, I don't know if it is safe. I really do not want to waste them and they look so YUMMY. Is it safe to eat a few?|||Yes in moderation seafood will be fine.|||Seafood is safe to eat in moderation. A lot of people think seafood is a risky thing to eat, but if it's cooked properly %26amp; eaten in moderation it's safe and has very good benefits for baby %26amp; mom. I limit myself to 6 oz of seafood, with a max of 12 in a week just to be safe, but I know plenty of people who've eaten much more and been fine during pregnancy. Just remember, before all these pregnancy books %26amp; "rules" people ate like they normally would even while pregnant %26amp; were still fine. I would make sure you don't let the seafood sit out too long though because it might get extra bacteria. Enjoy :)|||Given that shellfish is the primary cause of listeria poisonings, I think you are much safer to eliminate it from your diet while you are pregnant. How do you cook frozen king crab legs and for how long?

The big question is whether the crab legs are cooked or are raw.

They are probably cooked as I have yet to see a frozen, uncooked crab. If the crab is cooked, the top of the shell on the legs will be a nice red color and the bottom a nice white. If they are raw, the top of the leg shell will be kind of a bluish/gray color and the bottoms are still white(ish).

I'll assume they are cooked.

If they are cooked, you can literally thaw them and eat them. Personally, I like cold king crab. If you do this, I'd put them in the fridge to thaw at least 24 hours before you plan on eating them (48 is better).

If you want the crab meat hot, then you literally want to just heat the meat. You want water involved otherwise the meat might dry out and be tough.

If the legs are small enough, I just put them in a pot of salted water (about 1 inch of water) and put the lid on. I boil the legs for about 10 minutes. Some people like to put Old Bay seasoning in the water. I don't mind this for snow crab, but I think it ruins King Crab.

If you don't have a pot big enough to boil them, you can steam them in the oven. I put them on a cookie sheet with sides on it. I put the legs in there with water (not much...make sure you won't spill when you take them out...been there, done that). Make a tent over the pan with Aluminum foil to keep the steam in (if you don't, the water will evaporate and the meat will dry out). When using the oven, there isn't a real science to it. I usually just put the legs in with whatever else I am cooking (say 350 to 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes).

If the legs are still raw, either method should work just fine. Just cook the crab until the shell turns a nice redish color on top.

Above all, don't overseason King Crab. King Crab is sweet and great tasting by itself (maybe with some ghee or regular melted butter). All I use is a little salt in the water.|||I was told by a crab fisherman that you should boil them for 7 minutes. No more, no less. He ate them almost every day.|||We just steam ours for about 12 minutes. They come out so tender and sweet and juicy.|||The legs I buy are frozen but already cooked. I get a roasting pan and wrap the legs in aluminum foil (you may have to take two pieces and put them together to make a large one). Then bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 - 45 minutes (maybe longer). You need to check them (by touch) to make sure they are heated enough. I've baked them for the entire 45 minutes only to find that the ones in the middle are still lukewarm.|||Just steam them in a huge pot over boiling/simmering water until thawed and hot through. They've been cooked already; you are merely thawing and heating them up.

I use a big oval roaster/lid, and put a ocuple inches of water in it, bring to a boil, and set a wire cooling rack on top, set the legs on that, then cover w/ the lid. Keeps them from getting soggy in the water, and since the steam is hotter than the water that makes it, it's a more effective way to cook.|||some packages say cook from frozen, other say to thaw first. I always thaw them in cold water for for a little while, then just throw them in a pot of boiling, salted, seasoned water, to which I add the juice of half a lemon. Boil for about 5 minutes is all they need. Call me when they are done, and I will bring fresh made cocktail sauce and a bottle of wine..........|||In hot water there are different times you can cook it.|||Drop them in boiling water and pull them out right as the water returns to a boil.|||The crab legs are already cooked, so you just have to thaw and heat them up. I put them in boiling water, with a some lemon juice and garlic pepper for seasoning, for about 5-7 minutes. Enjoy!

How long is a king crab fishing season?

"Fishing season The most popular crab-fishing months occur between October and January. The allocated time for a season continued to shrink鈥攁t one point a red crab season was only four days long. After 2005, each boat was given a quota based on their catch from previous years and how many crabs are available to catch. The fleet went from 251 boats down to 89. Currently the seasons last from two to four weeks.[2][5]"

Whats the best way to heat up king crab legs?

Microwave in a damp towel or steam.

King crab legs are usually cooked when you buy them so the goal is to heat them up with out washing away any flavors or overcooking.|||Steam|||Steam and boil.

From Frozen, follow these steps:

Here is an article I thought was informative and helpful! Hope it helps! Good luck! :)

Steaming: Place pre-cooked frozen crab legs in a vegetable steamer or colander over heavy and rapid boiling water (fill pot about 1/3 of theway with water.) Cover tightly and steam them 10-12 minutes until heated through and through.

Seafood requires a shorter cooking time than beef, lamb or chicken and because most species of seafood have a low fat and high water content they can easily be overcooked. The good news is; Pre-cooked shellfish can be eaten cold, warm or hot. Too much steaming will toughen the flesh as it dries out and too much cooking when submerged in water will make the flesh soggy.

Can you bake alaskan king crab legs?

You can in a pot of water in the oven.

Really - the oven will dry it out.|||You can bake them in the oven or you can do them on the stove top. Here is a recipe I use.

INGREDIENTS

1 pound Snow Crab clusters, thawed if necessary

1/4 cup butter

1 clove garlic, minced

1 1/2 teaspoons dried parsley

1/8 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon fresh-ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS

Cut a slit, length-wise, into the shell of each piece of crab.

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat; cook the garlic in the butter until translucent; stir in the parsley, salt, and pepper. Continue to heat mixture until bubbling. Add the crab legs; toss to coat; allow to simmer in the butter mixture until completely heated, 5 to 6 minutes.|||Crab legs are already cooked if they're red. All you're really doing is warming them up again. I think baking might take too long and dry them out.

How much do alaskan king crab fisherman make?

I went to high school the captain and 1/3 owner of the F/V Northwestern (probably the most popular boat on the Discovery Channel crab fishing show). He graduated at the bottom of our class. His first year as a full-time commercial fisherman he grossed over $60k... that was over 20 years ago.

A greenhorn (first year fisherman) makes a flat fee their first trip. If they proved themselves as a greenhorn, the second trip they'll get a percentage of what the boat makes.

I now live on the opposite coast and am no longer "in touch" with the commercial fishing industry. The gov't. has done away with the derby season for crab fishing (in the name of safety). Boats are now alllocated how many pounds of crab they can catch before the, now, expanded season opens. In the future there will be fewer crab boats fishing the Bering Strait. This will mean fewer jobs.|||Alot dude. This is because you have to be mental in order to do it. It is literally one of the deadliest jobs in the world. But again, you do make bank. What would be a good way to cook King Prawns to serve with a Crab Linguine?

They are still in their shell and I would like to serve them that way, perhaps with just the head removed. And theyd be just as good fried as grilled if you prefer!

So yeah, enjoy your crab linguine and prawns :).|||Flash-fry some garlic and green onions, salt and pepper. Throw in the prawns to heat through. Serve. Takes about 2 minutes from start to finish.

How do you cook Alaskan King Crab Legs??? Any good recipes???

My husband puts them in a pot with beer and old bay seasoning only. Maybe 1 1/2 cans of colt45 beer. It really depends on how many king crabs you have.

After you steam them for 15 - 20 mins with a lid on the pot, shaking them up frequently, then you eat. If he does'nt have any beer or oldbay, he steams the scrabs in plain water. Once they're done, he pours the water off and melts some butter and garlic in thepot with the crabs and enjoys. If you like Alaskan crabs, try Dungenees Crab Clusters. There is so much meat and I guarantee that you'll be hooked and you won't want alaskan anymore.|||Although most crab products that you buy in the US are already cooked this is what you can do if they are raw: You can simply throw the crabs in a pot of boiling water to cook them. Depending on the size of the crabs, it will take between 6 and 10 minutes to cook them. If the crab is alive when you start, the amount of cooking time has very little to do with safety 鈥?it鈥檚 more a question of whether the meat is underdone, overdone, or cooked just right. For blue crabs, six minutes is adequate; for a Dungeness, boil for 8 to 10 minutes. The shells of many varieties of crab turn red when they have been adequately cooked.

If you want to clean the crabs before you cook them, you can kill them by tossing them into boiling water for 30 seconds or by cutting just behind the eyes to remove the head. Next, scrape out the gills that are found under flaps just over the legs. Then, turn the crab over. On the underbelly you will find the "tail" or "apron," a slightly-lifted triangular flap. Pull this off. Finally, rinse the crab and pop it back into the pot.

6 pounds crab legs, frozen Alaskan King, 16 legs

2 sticks butter, unsalted

1 clove garlic, peeled, crushed

salt,

1 medium lemon, squeezed

We begin by pre-heating the oven to 400 degrees. In a small pot we melt the butter with the garlic and a pinch of salt over low heat. We then add the lemon juice and keep the pot on very low heat.

We put the frozen crab legs exposed crabmeat up into two 9 by 13 inch pans and brush them all over with the melted butter-lemon juice mix. We put the pan carefully in the oven, the legs are BIG, and bake for about 30 minutes brushing the exposed crabmeat a couple of times with the butter mixture. We want the crab legs to be heated through. We do not use all of the butter, we have about 4 or 5 tablespoons of butter remaining which we divide among small prep bowls. Roasted Plum Tomato Gazpacho With Lump King Crab

8 plum tomatoes

olive oil, for drizzle

16 ounces spicy V-8 juice (or other tomato juice)

1/2 red pepper, cut into dice

1/2 green pepper, cut into dice

6 scallions, diced

1 teaspoon honey

2 teaspoons garlic, minced

2 tablespoons cider vinegar or red wine vinegar

1 teaspoon cumin

3 tablespoons finely chopped parsley

1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)

Tabasco sauce

4 slices bakery bread (An Italian loaf will do nicely.)

butter (to coat the bread slices)

1 (1 lb) king crab meat

Spray the bottom of a heatproof pan with olive oil. Cut plum tomatoes in half lengthwise and lay them in the pan. Sixteen halves fit nicely in a 9- by 13-inch pan. Drizzle the whole lot with olive oil. A teaspoon or less per tomato will do it.

Roast the tomatoes one hour at 500掳F At 45 minutes you can check them, but unless they are really small tomatoes, they will not burn. You want to take them out just when a few of them are starting to get a char on the edges. The longer they are in there, the more intense the flavor will be.

Puree in a blender. You can leave a few chunks if you want, but this won't take long to get a nice puree. Set aside to cool.

In a large mixing bowl, put the V8, the red and green peppers, the scallions, honey, garlic, vinegar, cumin, parsley and salt. Add the pureed tomatoes and stir. Taste. Add Tabasco or hot sauce to taste. (A teaspoon or two should do it. If your guests like it hotter, place the Tabasco on the table so they can add more.)

You can put the soup in your refrigerator to chill and serve later, or you can serve it room temperature now.

For the Open-Face Crab Sandwich: When you are just about ready to serve, you are going to prepare your floating, open-face crab sandwich.

Butter your bread slices on one side. Place them on a cookie sheet and bake in a 350掳F oven for 7 minutes or until very lightly golden on the buttered side. Flip them over and toast for 3 minutes more.

Spoon the soup into shallow bowls. Place the toasted bread on top in the middle of the soup and then pile one quarter of the crab on top of each person's bread slice. It's a sizeable handful. A few pieces will fall off into the soup. That's fine. The soup will be room temperature or cold, the bread will be warm and the crab will be ice cold from the refrigerator. The juxtaposition of the temperatures makes this a very interesting dish.|||you boil them and then serve them with lemon wedge and melted warm butter

As far as taste goes, what's the difference between blue, king & snow crab?

I'm not asking about price, cooking, habitats, preparation, anything, just asking about taste.|||Hi SB22

Ok this is from a chef so Im picky... from the North Pacific, think Alaska and Japan comes the King Crabs and the Snow Crabs, Why would this matter? because it means colder waters delicate flavored meat, snow white and edged with a beautiful bright red color, and its big.. I prefer only the king because I like this meaty texture and the sweet flavor of this meat, snow is ok but I don't care for the shredded meat that this crab tends to produce, plus its small, too much work for little taste.. The blue comes from warmer water along the Atlantic and Gulf coast, which is becoming costly because of the oil spills and harvesting seasons. I do enjoy this as well but only the soft shell blues, which are pan fried, flavor is also delicate to strong and the texture is very different soft and crunchy, the key for crustaceans is the colder the water the sweeter the meat....still my number one choice is the King crab, unfortunately a KING price is attached....

the other thing is that they are two really big pieces, one leg and one claw and they are not going to fit into the pot unless i break them in half, is that ok?|||Yes it is ok to break the legs to fit in a huge pot of boiling water---all you need to do---after 10-15 minutes, (more like 10)--they are done. You will notice when the colour turns really white %26amp; pink %26amp; can feel the meat inside is firm.

Meanwhile, melt butter in a small pan for dipping.

King Crab RULES! pun intended! My husband's FAV too!

Bon Appetit!|||Get the biggest stove top pot you have, put about two cups of water in the pot, and add a cover of some sort to put in the pot to cover the water and allow steam to seep through. I use a pie pan, poke holes in it, and turn it upside down and put in the bottom of the pot (unconventional but it woks). Turn the heat on high and let the water boil and steam the legs for about 15 minutes. It's okay to break the larger pieces if need be. After 15 minutes, test a leg by breaking it and making sure the meat is moist. Bon apetit!|||Things You'll Need:

Preparing king crab is usually just a matter of using your preferred reheating method:

* Steam Preparation - Let the water in the bottom of the steamer pot come to a boil, then I add the crab legs in the steamer and cover. The crabs will be heated through when you can smell them. I also pick one up with a tong and touch the meaty part just to be sure that it is indeed warm. The best way to get at the meat is to use scissors. I use the kitchen shears that come with knife sets but you can buy one at any kitchen supply store by itself. Just break the crab apart at the obvious places and then cut down the middle. I also have but is not necessary a glove in case the crab is really hot or if it is very spiny.

* Oven Preparation - Arrange in shallow baking pan. Add hot water to fill pan 1/8 inch deep. Cover with foil. Bake at 350 degrees F. until just heated through (7 to 10 minutes).

* Microwave Preparation - Add crab legs to a microwave safe container. Add 1 tbsp. water per 8 oz. of crab legs. Microwave on high 3-4 minutes per 8 oz. of crab legs. Serve with lemon wedges, clarified butter and use nutcrackers to open shells.

* Serving Cold - Defrost at room temperature for a crab salad or serve cold with mustard/hollandaise sauce.

* Clarified butter - Clarified butter is also called drawn butter. Simply defined, clarified butter is unsalted butter that has the milk solids and water removed so all that remains is pure liquid golden-yellow butterfat. The advantages of this type of butter is its long keeping quality (several months refrigerated) and its high smoke point (can be used in frying without burning). The disadvantage is that it doesn't have that same wonderful rich flavor of regular unsalted butter (since the milk solids have been removed) but it does have a more buttery taste than other oils.

* Melt the butter then let it sit for a couple of minutes, then pour the clear butter, (it will come out first from the pan) into a serving dish or butter dishes and STOP pouring when you see the milky stuff at the bottom of the pan. Clarified butter can be heated hotter than regular butter and will not burn as easily as regular butter does so you can use it to saute fish or chicken and it imparts a real buttery flavor to the food.

Storage: Thawed crab legs can be maintained in the refrigerator for two days, but they should really be cooked as soon as they have been defrosted if possible.

How long do i boil king crab legs?

We broil (not boil) the king crab legs that we get in the oven. I think they may be pre-cooked. It seems like about 5 minutes. Just long enough for the little water on them to sizzle and the meat is warm. Don't want to over cook them.

Serve with melted butter or melted butter with some crushed garlic in the butter.|||The problem is, as several of us pointed out, most crab legs you get are already cooked. I've never seen raw, uncooked king crab legs. Which is why none of us has said how long to boil them for.

Pre-cracking the shells-gently- for your guests with a small mallet, and having shellfish forks to pick out the rest of the meat, along with fresh drawn, and separated butter on small candle burning individual heaters, along with fresh garlic bread, a nice fresh romaine caesar salad and simple baked or doublebaked and cheese stuffed potatoes would be perfect.
